A big turnout for a January BP ride

Sunday 13th December. A cold grey day saw 14 Cyclists leave via Lower marsh, Berrylands, New Malden, Coombe, Ladderstile gate of Richmond park, Ham cross, to Richmond gate & Richmond for lunch at ‘the White cross’, with high tide not due until 4.00pm, even the Riverside railings where safe. After lunch & after Johns annual thank-you speech, saying farewell to 3, but hello to 3 more Cyclists, (how did they know where lunch was ?), via Richmond bridge, Ducks walk, St Margerets, Isleworth, Osterley to Osterley park for Tea & BP, return to Osterley, Hounslow, Whitton, Twickenham, Crane river path, Fulwell, Laurel rd gate of Bushy park, Cobblers walk, Hampton wick gate, Kingston Bridge. Sunday 22nd November, Part 1. An Icily cold, sunny Morning saw 11 Cyclists leave via Lower Marsh, Berrylands, New Malden, Malden manor, Worcester park, Nonsuch park, East Ewell, Epsom to Epsom common for lunch at ‘the Cricketers’ then via Horton, where a small detachment thought they knew a different route, but with all back together, St. Ebba’s path, Hogsmill river path, West Ewell, Tolworth greenway, King Charles, Cranes park to Kingston. Sub-Total 18 Miles, with very special thanks to Diane for help with Marshalling.

Part 2, with the Sky more overcast, but still dry, we said farewell to 6, no fresh faces, (and no Ladies)  just 5 Guys left via Canbury gardens, Lower Ham, Aerospace estate, Ham, Ham gate of Richmond park to Petersham gate, Richmond bridge, Ducks walk, St. Margerets, Cole park, Whitton to Kneller Gardens for Tea & BP, then Crane river path, Twickenham,  Teddington, Hampton wick & Kingston bridge. Sunday 8th November. An overcast, but otherwise dry pleasant day saw 26 Cyclists, wait whilst a slow puncture was fixed, then via Lower Marsh, Berrylands, New Malden, Motspur park, Joseph hood memorial park, Pyl brook path, Sutton, Carshalton, Hackbridge, then the Wandle trail, Poulter park, Ravensbury park, Morden hall park, more Wandle path to Merton Abbey mills with the majority electing for lunch at ‘the William Morris’, & a few going for lunch at a nearby Cafe, afterwards more Wandle trail to Earlsfield, Wandsworth common, Battersea reach, Wandsworth, Wandsworth park, Putney, Barnes common to Roehampton gate of Richmond park for Tea & BP, then via White lodge, Ham cross, Kingston gate to Kingston. Sunday 25th October. A bright but chilly day saw 24 Cyclists having remembered to put the clocks back, leaving via Kingston bridge, Bushy park, Hampton hill, Fulwell, Crane river path, Whitton, Isleworth, Osterley park, Norwood green, Southall, Greenford, Marnham fields to Northolt for lunch at ‘the Crown’, then Grand union canal towpath, to Horsenden lane, footbridge over the A40, where a slipped chain caused a small delay, Pitshanger park, North Ealing, West Acton, Acton park, where the intended Tea stop was shut allegedly due to a wasp’s nest, so continuing Acton green, Chiswick, subway below the A4, Grove park, Chiswick bridge, Mortlake, East Sheen, Sheen gate of Richmond park, to Pen ponds for Tea & BP, then continuing to Kingston gate to the Market place. Sunday 11th October. a cool Sunny day saw 20 Cyclists gather at the alternative meeting point, Fountain New Malden, go via Motspur park, Bushey Mead, Merton park, Morden hall park, Mitcham, Thornton heath, Selhurst, South Norwood, Monks orchard, Shirley, Addington village, Featherbed lane to Fickleshole for lunch at ‘the White Bear’, then joined by 1 extra Cyclist and with a small ‘breakaway group’ safely Shepherded to Chelsham by John W, Warlingham, Mitchley wood, Riddlesdown common, Purley, South Croydon, Wallington to Beddington park for Tea & BP, then Hackbridge, the Wrythe, Sutton, Pyl brook path, Joseph Hood memorial park, Motspur park to New Malden. Sunday 27th September Part 1. A bright Sunny day saw 19 Cyclists leave via Lower Marsh, Berrylands, New Malden, Malden golf course, Copse hill, Wimbledon common, Putney heath, Roehampton to Barnes for lunch at the ‘Red Lion’, then Barnes green, Roehampton gate of Richmond park, Ham cross, Ham gate and North Kingston. Sub total 16 Miles, 3 new faces.

Part 2 , farewell to 10, welcome to 6 fresh faces, left via Lower Marsh, Berrylands, Tolworth, the ‘Greenway’, Bonesgate path, Horton country park, Clarendon park, St. Ebba’s path, Hogsmill path, Ewell village, East Ewell to Nonsuch park for Tea & BP, then Stoneleigh, Worcester park, New Malden, Berrylands to Kingston. Sub total 16 Miles, 2 new faces, 1 Puncture. Overall 32 Miles.

Sunday 13th September. A mostly cloudy morning, with a brighter afternoon, saw 18 Cyclists gather for an early start, leave via Portsmouth Rd, Giggs hill green, Weston green,  Esher, Walton on Thames, Oatlands, Weybridge, Brooklands park, Byfleet village, Wey navigation, Pyrford, Woking, Goldsworth park to Knaphill, for lunch at ‘the Royal oak’. Afterwards, leaving via the ‘secret gate’, to Waterers park, Castle green, Chobham, Stonehill, Homeland park, Addlestone, Victory park, Wey navigation towpath, Thames towpath to Walton bridge for Tea & BP at ‘Gino’s’, (with the ‘white elephant’ of a new Cafe/toilet block, still vacant), Walton on Thames, Molesey, Thames Ditton, & Portsmouth Rd to Kingston. Wednesday 2nd September. The last evening ride of 2015 saw 9 Cyclists leave via Surbiton, Long Ditton, Hinchley wood, Littleworth common, Esher to Molesey for refreshments at ‘the Bell’, then Thames Ditton and Portsmouth Rd back to Kingston. Total 13 Miles.

Sunday 23rd August. A dry start, with a heavy shower of rain during lunch, saw 15 Cyclists leave via  Kingston bridge, Bushy park, Fulwell, River Crane path, Whitton, Hounslow heath, West Hounslow,  Cranford, Harlington, Sipson to Harmondsworth for lunch at ‘the five bells’, after lunch with some light drizzle still in the air, the option to visit the ‘Cathedral of Middlesex’, or the Harmondsworth great barn, as it is more properly known, before finding the rain had ceased, and even some bright Sun, then Harmondsworth moor, Poyle, Stanwell moor, Stanwell, Bedfont, Feltham, Hanworth, Hampton, Bushy park to ‘the Pheasantry for Tea & BP, then to Church grove & Kingston bridge. Wednesday 12th August. A bright evening saw a Bakers dozen (13 ) Cyclists leave via Skerne Rd, Lower Ham rd, Thames Towpath, Aerospace estate, Ham, Ham House, more Towpath to  Richmond bridge, Ducks walk, St Margerets to Twickenham for refreshments at ‘the Sussex arms’, then Strawberry hill, Teddington, Hampton wick, Kingston bridge. Total 11 Miles, 4 new faces.

Sunday 9th August. A hot Sunny day saw 19 Cyclists gather at Tolworth Station for the Summer special Challenge ride leave via, the ‘Bonesgate’ path, Horton country park (where a small twig almost terminated the leaders ride, thankfully just the front mudguard payed the price), Ashtead common, Leatherhead, Fetcham, Great Bookham, Effingham, White down, Abinger, Holmbury St. Mary, Forest green to Walliswood for a splendid lunch at ‘the Scarlett arms’. Then via Okewood hill, Tipham, Ockley, Capel, Newdigate, Shellwood cross to Brockham Church for Tea & BP, then Betchworth park, Pixham, Westhumble, Juniper hill, Headley, Langley vale, Woodcote, Epsom common, West Ewell to Tolworth.     Total 50 Miles, 5 new faces, 38 very tired legs. Saturday 1st August. A bright sunny day saw approx 80 Cyclists leave the Market place, via Skerne Rd, Kingston gate of Richmond park, to Roehampton gate, with the numbers now swelled to 100 plus, then Barnes, Thames towpath, Putney Bridge, Fulham, Parsons green, Brompton cemetery, South Kensington, Belgravia, to Buckingham gate to join the central route for Freewheel. After a well earned lunch, the return ride gathered on Birdcage walk with about 50 Cyclists leaving via Constitution hill, to Hyde park, to Queens gate, Kensington to rejoin the outward route, Brompton Cemetery, Parsons green, Fulham, Putney bridge, an ‘almost overflowing’ Thames towpath, Barnes, Roehampton gate of Richmond park to Kingston gate, with only 10 cyclists finishing at the Market place. A very big thank-you to all the Marshals who helped Roger lead the ride.

Sunday 26th July. A mostly dull wet day, saw 11 Cyclists, (with 4 other non straters) gather at Woking, with the heavy rain stopping before we got to the Basingstoke canal towpath, then St. Johns, Knaphill, Bisley, Donkey town, Lightwater, Windlesham, to Chobham common for lunch at the ‘Four Horseshoes’, then via Gracious pond, Homewood park, Addlestone, Weybridge, Oatlands park, Ashley park, Walton on Thames, Thames towpath, Sunbury lock to say hello to Tony, (assistant lock-keeper ), Molesey where a jammed derailier almost finished our leaders ride, thankfully a bit of judicious twisting allowed us to continue to Molesey Cricket club for Tea & BP, then Hampton court bridge, more towpath to Kingston bridge & the Market place. A dry bright evening saw 11 Cyclists leave via lower marsh, Berrylands, New Malden, Malden manor, Stoneliegh, Nonsuch park, East Ewell, Ewell village for refreshments at the Wheatsheaf, the West Ewell, hogsmill path, Tolworth, where a puncture sufferer needed assistance from the leader, so the leaders baton passed to John W, back to Kingston. Total 14 Miles, 1 new face.

Sunday 12th July. A mostly cloudy day with light drizzle in the Morning, saw 19 Cyclists leave via Portsmouth Rd, Long Ditton, Claygate, Stokesheath Rd, Oxshott, Stoke D’Abernon, Downside, Ockham, Groveheath to Send Marsh for lunch at ‘the Saddlers arms, also bumping into a small contingent of CTC ‘Sou’westers’. Afterwards via Pyrford, West Byfleet, Basingstoke Canal & Wey Navigation towpath to Weybridge, Thames towpath to Walton bridge for Tea & BP at ‘Gino’s’, then Ashley park, Walton park, Esher, Weston green, Giggs hill green, Portsmouth Rd to Kingston. Sunday 21st June. Part 1, A mostly bright day saw 19 Cyclists leave via Portsmouth Rd, Long Ditton, Hinchley wood, Claygate, Malden rushett, Horton park, Long grove park, West Ewell, Hogsmill path, Tolworth, Malden manor to New Malden for lunch at ‘Woodies’, then via Berrylands and lower marsh to Kingston. Sub total 16 Miles, 3 new faces. Part 2, farewell to 9, hello to 3 fresh faces so 13 Cyclists left via Canbury Gardens, towpath to Ham, Aerospace estate, Ham House, Towpath to Richmond, O’Higgins Square, Richmond bridge, towpath to Marble hill house for Tea & BP, then St. Margerets, Twickenham, Kneller Gardens, Crane river path, Fulwell, Hampton, Bushy park, where a wayward Child Cyclist, (not with us), almost caused a calamitous incident with 2 of our group suffering some minor bruises, Hampton wick, Kingston Bridge. Sub total 14 Miles, Total 30 Miles.

A mostly bright, Sunny evening saw 13 Cyclists leave via Lower marsh, Berrylands, New Malden, Coombe, Ladderstile gate of Richmond park, Pen ponds,  Richmond gate to Richmond hill for refreshments at  the ‘Roebuck’, before returning to Richmond park, to Kingston gate & Kingston. Sunday 7th June. A bright and sunny day saw 28 Cyclists leave via Skerne Rd, Kingston gate of Richmond park to Sheen, Mortlake, Chiswick bridge, Chiswick, (where a piece of miscommunication led to a small detachment taking a different approach via Kew, Brentford, South Ealing, West Ealing, Perivale, (thanks Nick for rescuing the breakaway)) with the main party continuing Acton, Park Royal, then the Grand union canal towpath, across the Aqueduct, to Greenford for lunch at ‘the Black horse’. Afterwards, more Towpath to Southall, Norwood green to Osterley park for Tea & BP, then Osterley, Hounslow, Whitton, Twickenham, Fulwell, Bushy park, to Hampton wick &  Kingston bridge. Sunday 24th May. A mostly bright day, with a very light sprinkling of drizzle as we approached the finish, saw 29 Cyclists leave after a rethink for a lunch venue for such a crowd via Kingston bridge, Bushy park, Hampton, Lower Feltham, Ashford, Staines, Egham, (with a small delay for a jammed chain) to Englefield green for lunch at ‘the Barley mow’. Afterwards Bishopsgate of Windsor Great Park, Totem pole & Virginia water lake, Virginia water, St. Ann’s hill, Chertsey, Chertsey bridge, Shepperton to Walton bridge for Tea & BP at Gino’s, then Walton on Thames, Hersham, Esher, Weston green, Giggs hill green and Portsmouth Rd to Kingston. Total 36 Miles, 7 new faces, special mention for Mike the Unicyclist, who was a big talking point & great company.

Wednesday 20th May. A bright evening with a chilly breeze, saw 4 cyclists leave via Kingston bridge, tow-path including a midgefest to Hampton court, East Molesey, Esher, Littleworth Common to Claygate, for refreshments at ‘the Griffin’, then Red lane, Woodstock Lane subway, Long Ditton, Surbiton and Kingston. Total 13 Miles.

Sunday 10 May A mostly cloudy but bright day saw 17 Cyclists leave via Cranes park, King Charles bridge, Tolworth Greenway, West Ewell, Epsom, Epsom Common, Langley Vale, Headley, Pebblecombe, Betchworth to Leigh for lunch at ‘the Plough’. Then Flanchford, Reigate, where a small splinter group went astray, regrouping in Redhill, Gatton park and the ‘standing stones’, Chipstead, Banstead, Belmont to Nonsuch park for Tea & BP, then Worcester park, New Malden, Berrylands to Kingston. Wednesday 29th April. A dry but chilly evening saw 7 Cyclists on the 1st ride of the year go via Kings Rd, Kingston gate of Richmond park to Ham gate, Ham, Teddington, Fulwell, to Hampton for refreshment’s at the ‘Roebuck’, then a lovely moonlit, Bushy park to Hampton Wick and Kingston Bridge. Sunday 26th April. A chilly overcast, but dry day saw 17 Cyclists leave via Skerne Rd, tow-path to Ham, Aerospace estate, Ham, Ham gate of Richmond park to Richmond gate, Kew Rd, Kew bridge, Brentford, where a minor saddle slippage was rectified, South Ealing, West Ealing, Pitshanger park, Perivale where Derek suffered a major wheel problem, caused him to abandon the ride, but the remainder found the Grand union canal tow-path to Harlesden for lunch at ‘the Grand Junction Arms’. Afterwards, more tow-path to Ladbroke Grove, North Kensington, under the Westway, (thanks to Nick for that link), Shepherds bush, Brook Green, Barons Court, Fulham to Bishops park for Tea & BP, then Putney Bridge, Putney, Barnes common, Roehampton gate of Richmond park, to Kingston gate, to Market place. Sunday 12th April – A dry day with a very strong South-Westerly wind, saw 20 Cyclists heading straight into the wind via Portsmouth Rd, Giggs hill green, Weston green, Esher, Walton on Thames, Weybridge, Brooklands country park, Byfleet, Wey navigation towpath, Basingstoke canal towpath, Sheerwater to Horsell Common for lunch at a very welcoming ‘Plough’. Afterwards, Horsell common, Anthony’s, Ottershaw, Addlestone, Weybridge, Thames towpath to Walton bridge for Tea & BP at ‘Gino’s’, with a seemingly redundant new building, then more Towpath to Hampton Court, Thames Ditton & Portsmouth Rd to Kingston. Sub total 14 Miles, 4 new faces.
Part 2
Farewell to 9, with 4 fresh faces, so 14 Cyclists, via Lower Ham Rd, Aerospace estate, Ham, Ham gate of Richmond park, to Roehampton gate, Roehampton, Putney heath to Wimbledon common for Tea & BP at the Windmill tearooms, then Crooked Billet, Copse hill, Malden golf course, New Malden, Norbiton to Kingston. Sunday 8th March
A mostly bright morning, with more Clouds later, saw 22 Cyclists leave via Fairfield, Coombe, New Malden, Malden golf course, Copse hill, Wimbledon village, Wimbledon park, Earlsfield, Wandsworth common, Clapham common, Clapham, Kennington, Burgess park, where the option to sign the Petition in favour of keeping the Subway open was taken, then the Peckham Canal path to Peckham for lunch at the ‘Kentish Drovers’. Afterwards, via Camberwell grove, pausing briefly to observe a very shame faced motorist with a very awkward predicament, Dulwich, Brockwell park, Tulse hill, Streatham hill, to Tooting Bec common for Tea & BP, then Tooting, Mitcham, Morden hall park, Merton park, Bushey mead, Raynes park, Motspur park, New Malden, Berrylands, to Kingston. Total 33 Miles, 6 new faces.

Sunday 22nd February, A mostly bright morning saw 15 Cyclists leave via Canbury Gardens, Tow-path to Ham, Aerospace estate, Ham, Ham gate of Richmond park, Roehampton gate, Barnes common, Putney, Putney Bridge, Fulham, Parsons green, Brompton Cemetery, West Kensington, Kensington gardens, Hyde park, Paddington Basin to Little Venice for lunch at ‘the Warwick Castle’.Afterwards, with increasing threats of Rain which were soon delivered along with a very cold head wind, along the Grand union Canal to Park Royal, West Acton, North Ealing, Ealing Common to Gunnersbury park, With Iyad suffering a fall resulting in a few Bruises just before the Tea stop with BP, then more Gunnersbury park, Kew Bridge, Kew Rd, Richmond, Richmond park, to Kingston gate and Kingston. Sunday 8th February saw 19 Cyclists leave via Portsmouth Rd, Giggshill green, Weston green, Esher, Walton on Thames, Weybridge, Addlestone, Victory park, Homeland park, Foxhills, Knowle hill, Wentworth to Sunningdale for a ‘split lunch’, some at ‘the Nags head’, some at a local Cafe. All back together, via Titterhust, Cheapside, Windsor Great park, with some superb views of Windsor Castle, Englefield green, Egham, Staines, Ashford, Lower Feltham, Hanworth, Hampton, Bushy park for Tea & BP at the ‘Pheasantry’, Hampton wick & Kingston bridge. A mostly overcast  but dry day saw 25 Cyclists leave via Kingston bridge, Bushy park to Hampton, Hanworth, Feltham, Bedfont, Stanwell, Stanwell moor, Poyle to Wraysbury for a ‘split lunch’ at the ‘Perseverance’ & the ‘George’. With everyone back together via Staines, Knowle green, Ashford, Charlton, Shepperton to Halliford garden centre, for Tea & BP, also saying hello to our friends from ‘Cheam & Morden CTC, then lower Sunbury, Hampton, Bushy park to Kingston. Sunday 11 January: A bright Sunny morning, with more cloud later, saw 20 cyclists ready for the first ride of ‘15 via Lower Marsh, Berrylands, Tolworth greenway, Hogsmill & Bonesgate paths, Horton country park, Ashtead common, Leatherhead, Fetcham to Great Bookham where a small detachment stopped for lunch at ‘Domestique’ Cafe, while the remainder continued to Effingham for lunch at the ‘Sir Douglas Haig’. With everyone back together via Effingham junction, Martyr’s green, a partially flooded Plough lane, Cobham, Fairmile to Claremont lake for Tea & BP, then Esher, Littleworth, Hinchley wood, Long Ditton, Surbiton to Kingston. 1 new face, 28 Miles.
